Suriya’s “Anjaan” has netted more than ₹30 crore in its opening weekend at the worldwide box office, according to Indiaglitz.

Despite receiving negative reviews, “Anjaan” took a humongous opening owing to pre-release buzz and advance booking. The Independence Day holiday and the weekend helped the film perform well at the box office.

According to reports, the Suriya starrer has minted ₹30 crore in its first weekend itself. If it turns out to be true, then the film has surpassed the opening weekend collections of Ajith’s “Veeram” and Vijay’s “Jilla.”

In Chennai, “Anjaan” has turned out to be biggest opener of 2014 so far. The film has surpassed the opening weekend collections of biggies like Ajith’s “Veeram”, Vijay’s “Jilla”, Rajinikanth’s “Kochadaiiyaan” and Dhanush’s “Velai Illa Pattathari” (“VIP”).

The Suriya starrer reportedly grossed ₹2.35 crore from 573 tracked weekend shows, according to Behindwoods. It has outperformed the collections fetched by “Veeram” and “Jilla”, which amount to ₹1.23 crore and ₹1.32 crore, respectively.

“Anjaan” collections are also much better than “Kochadaiiyaan” (₹1.80 crore) and “VIP” (₹1.67 crore). [Note: the number of tracked shows varies for these films]

“Anjaan” has also fared well in the overseas markets. To get the details about the film’s overseas collections, click HERE.

The film has ended the first weekend on a fantastic note. Now, it remains to be seen how the action entertainer fares in the weekdays at the ticket window. Its collections might drop owing to negative feedback.

The release of “Anjaan” has affected the performance of other films like “VIP” and “Jigarthanda” as they have lost several shows to the Suriya starrer. It remains to be seen whether these films will be able to bounce back in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the makers of “Anjaan” have trimmed the film by 20 minutes as the Lingusamy directorial received flak for its lengthy runtime. The film’s runming time is now 2 hours and 30 minutes and theatres have begun screening the re-edited version.

“#Anjaan – Final cut from today – 20 minutes trimmed. 9 min 1st half + 11 min 2nd half. Now Running Time 2 hrs 30 minutes!,” entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai tweeted.

Producer L. Sridhar, who has acquired the rights of the Telugu dubbed version of Tamil film “Anjaan” titled “Sikandar”, says the movie will do for Suriya what “Baasha” did for superstar Rajinikanth many years ago.

Both versions of the film are releasing Friday.

“I can confidently say that ‘Sikandar’ will be Suriya’s own ‘Baasha’. It will do all that for Suriya what ‘Baasha’ did to Rajinikanth. It’s going to be a milestone film in his career. I’m proud to be taking this film to Telugu audiences,” Sridhar told.

“Suriya plays a Mumbai gangster and the audiences are going to love him in his new avatar. It’s an underworld revenge drama that revolves around friendship and love. The film comes with a good share of action and twists,” he said.

Directed by N. Linguswamy, the film also features Vidyut Jammwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Manoj Bajpayee and Dalip Tahil in important roles.

“I think Linguswamy has given the perfect commercial entertainer. All his films have done good business in Telugu and I’m glad that he gave me the rights of the film,” he said.

Jyothika, wife of actor Suriya, is all set to face the arc lights after seven years with the Tamil remake of recent Malayalam hit “How Old Are You”.

The film will be produced by Suriya’s home banner 2D Entertainment.

“Jyothika is all set to return in the Tamil remake of blockbuster Malayalam movie ‘How Old Are You’ that featured Manju Warrier in the lead role,” a statement said.

“2D Entertainment has now acquired the remake rights of this film, which will be directed by Rosshan Andrrews, who helmed the original as well. The process of finalising the rest of the cast is underway,” the statement added.

Incidentally, “How Old Are You” was the comeback movie of Manju Warrier to Malayalam films after a long gap.

Jyothika, who is known for films like “Kaakha Kaakha”, “Vettaiyaadu Vilayadu” and “Manmadhan”, was last seen in 2007 Tamil film “Manikanda”.

She quit acting after the birth of her daughter Diya in 2007. Three years later, she was blessed with a boy, Dev.

Actor Suriya-starrer Tamil actioner “Anjaan”, which is releasing Friday, is going to open in a record number of 1,400 cinemas worldwide, making it the biggest release for the actor in his career. The film releases in Tamil as well as Telugu on the same day.

“Anjaan”, which is jointly produced by Thiruppathi Brothers and UTV Motion Pictures, is dubbed in Telugu as “Sikandar”.

“It’s (‘Anjaan’) releasing in about 1,400 screen worldwide. That’s probably the biggest release for Suriya in his career. Since the film is releasing in Tamil as well as Telugu on the same day, it’s opening in maximum number of screens,” trade analyst Trinath said.

Trinath says the film is expected to take the box office by storm.

“Since no other big Tamil or Telugu film is releasing on Friday, Anjaan’ is expected to register record openings. The film’s trailer and the pre-booking have already created enough buzz for audiences to throng to cinemas,” he said

“Anjaan” will also lock horns with Ajay Devgn’s “Singham Returns”, but it won’t be a battle to look forward to, says Trinath.

“Suriya’s film will release in maximum number of screens in south India, while Devgn’s Singham Returns’ will target rest of the country and overseas. I don’t think the two films will compete because they’re focusing on different territories,” he added.

But it’s a coincidence that the real Singam (Suriya) will go head on with Singham.

Suriya’s “Anjaan” will also be the first south Indian film to release worldwide in digital.

“Digital Revolution in South India. #Anjaan will be the 1st high budget film with a Huge Star, which will release only thro Digital Screens. No Physical Print is allowed forA#AnjaanAscreening anywhere in the world. Having shot the film with 6K resoln quality, we want only digital,” posted UTV’s south chief G. Directed by N. Linguswamy, “Anjaan” also features Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Manoj Bajpayee, Vidyut Jammwal, Dalip Tahil and Chitrangada Singh in important roles.

“Coming to Thala Ajith and Ilayathalapathy Vijay, I share good rapport with them. Their huge fan base is because of their 25 years of hard work in film industry. They have done 50+ movies so far and I’ve just reached 30.”, he added.

“Ever since my debut in Nerukku Ner and superhit Friends, I had a good bonding with Vijay. He messages me after watching my films, trailers and teasers.”, Suriya concluded.

Suriya’s Anjaan opposite Samantha is all set to hit the screens worldwide this Friday, on Independence day. Lingusamy directed Anjaan will hit all the screens in digital format, says producers.

No physical print is allowed for Anjaan screening anywhere in the world. Having shot the film with 6K resolution quality, we want only digital.”

The digital projection of a film will help to curb piracy, as there will be a special code in digital format which can trace the origin of piracy.

Suriya-Samantha starring Anjaan is expected to take huge openings for the 3-day weekend on August 15. The film will release in more than 1500 screens worldwide including Tamil and Telugu versions.

Thirupathi Brothers and UTV has jointly produced Anjaan with Yuvan Shanakar Raja’s music.
